Assessment

A case history is taken from you to gain an overview of your child’s previous language development and current communication skills, together with your concerns. This is seen in the context of relevant family history, medical history and any educational issues.

A more detailed assessment of your child’s communication skills is then made through the use of formal and informal assessments.

Informal assessment may be carried out through the use of play materials, picture cards and books to ascertain the main areas of need. Formal assessment involves the use of standardised tests and assessments to provide an age-equivalent score for relevant areas of speech and language ability.

Areas assessed include attention and listening skills; understanding of language; expressive language; speech sound development; social use of language; and play skills.

Some areas will be assessed in more depth depending on the main areas of concern.

Reports

A detailed written report is provided which outlines your child’s strengths and areas of need, and which makes recommendations for support.

Copies will be provided to other health and education professionals at your request to help ensure continuity of care for your child. Speech and Language Therapy recommendations often support the work of other professionals, such as teachers or Portage Home Visitors. The report can also contribute to the multi-disciplinary assessment and management of your child.
