Frequently Asked Questions

Q - Where will you see my child?

A  - Children are usually seen in my clinic but can occasionally be seen at home if this is more suitable for your child. This can be discussed before appointments are made. There is a charge for travel costs for home visits.

Q - Do you see children alone or do parents sit in on the sessions?

A - Parents sit in on the sessions. Seeing how your child responds to therapy activities will give you a real insight into their areas of need and the methods used to support them. There are also plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

Q - How many sessions will my child need?

A - This depends on the kind of difficulties that your child has and will be discussed with you. Many parents book a six-week course of therapy initially.

Q - How long are the therapy sessions?

A - This depends on the language areas that your child is having difficulty with and also on your child’s own level of concentration. Time also needs to be allowed for discussion. 45 minute sessions may be appropriate where several areas of language ability are affected.

Q - Does it matter if my child also has an NHS Speech and Language Therapist (SLT)?

A - No, this doesn't matter. However, continuity of care is important for your child so I'll ask for your permission to contact your NHS SLT.

Q - My child is quite shy and may not talk to you. What do you do if this happens?

A - I usually begin the assessment session by talking with you whilst your child plays with some interesting toys . This enables them to settle in without putting any pressure on them to talk. By the time I'm ready to carry out some assessment they are invariably relaxed enough to join in with activities.
